The Semaphore of Skin series developed from a recent mentorship I undertook with Pergamena, parchment makers in upstate New York. The series is part of my current mixed media project on inherited memory and silenced trauma, through which I am exploring the idea of skin as a conduit for memory and the ongoing presence of a life once lived.
The images, of animal hides that have been de-haired and are waiting for the next stage of the parchment-making process, capture the fluidity, grace and presence of the creaturely, urging an unforgetting and reshaping, and a giving voice and body to that which had previously been silenced.
