Mother and Child and Mary Cassatt (Single)
DESCRIPTION
I was invited to have free run of the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, Connecticut, along with the assistance of a curator, if I would contribute a print of one of the resulting images for the Museum's big annual fundraiser. The Museum was the home of Theodate Pope, the first licensed female architect in Connecticut, and one of the first American collectors of modern European art and classical Japanese art. I directed that the coverlet on the settee be rearranged as you see it, that the dress in the photo be brought from a closet in the house and laid out as you see it, and that the doll be brought from the children's room. I wanted the scene to echo the one in the Cassatt above the settee, and the photograph give a sense that the house was still lived in.
