Much like a canvas painted upon, the human face distorts, morphs, stretches its porous surface to express a state of emotion. The intensity of what we feel internally is compressed and condensed into the furrowing of a brow, the crinkle or droop of the eyes or the tension that stretches across ones lips.
This series of portraits further expounds upon the internal emotional landscape, in specific seeking to uncover vulnerability, distress and fear. Each image presents a struggle that is countered with passivity, or a lack of confrontation.
Through the use of self portraiture and projecting my fears upon another person close to me, I was allowing myself to confront those fears; to see them from a variety of different perspectives, rather than burying them.
Substrate is situated in a seemingly unidentifiable time or space that allows ones self to return continuously to re-evaluate ones state of emotional being. Fear does not dissipate over time, yet evolves to match ones present state of mind.
