Monoliths in Memoriam (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Nestled in valleys, perched atop hills, and embedded on the mountainsides of Hong Kong are colossal complexes of cemeteries, crematoriums, and columbarium that have been constructed in monumental fashion. These massive allocations of the landscape are prevalent throughout the region; the cemeteries are often state-run and are referred to as Hong Kong’s “permanent” cemeteries, in contrast to the other smaller complexes or village graves in the territory. Most often these structures are constructed into the sides of hills or mountains and slope down to the sea, in accordance with the principles of feng shui, which serves to enhance their visibility and monumentality.
AUTHOR
I am a travel and landscape photographer based in New York City. I was born and raised in the South Carolina Lowcountry, and have since traveled around the world to such places as Iceland, Hong Kong, Germany, and South Africa. Through my imagery I seek to reveal the beautiful, the powerful, and the sublime aspects of the land and the people I encounter.
Whether I am walking down neon-showered city streets or cloud-covered mountain trails, I am always searching for that next striking image.
I am a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where I received my BFA in Photography.
