Antarctica is the coldest, harshest and most remote location on earth, but these adjectives only encompass a small part of its full character. In my travels there I have also witnessed serene power, striking beauty, delicate balance, and tender affection. This series explores these varied and complex faces of Antarctica.
"Approaching B15": A 27- meter expedition ship approaches a small piece of B15, the largest iceberg ever recorded. This small piece towered over 100 meters above the water.
"Spotted": Leopard seals are beautiful, fearsome predators, and this one showed no fear as we motored past the iceberg on which it rested.
"Last Voyage of the Petrel": The Petrel, an abandoned whaling ship, sits beached beneath an unusually clear Antarctic night sky. It is illuminated by green and red lights on port buoys in Grytviken Bay.
"Dance": A Wilson's Storm Petrel, Antarctica's smallest warm-blooded animal, flits across the water with incredible agility while feeding on krill near the surface.
"Proud Parents": Two king penguin parents dote on their chick for a brief moment together. They must take turns hunting to provide enough food and will only be together momentarily before the rested parent must return to the icy Antarctic water.

AUTHOR
Eric has traveled from the Arctic to the Antarctic to explore remote and stunning locations, but he is equally satisfied by finding a unique perspective in his home city of San Francisco. His images have won or been honored in 16 international photo contests including the BBC Wildlife Grant, PDN Great Outdoors Contest, and Travel Photographer of the Year, and his work has been published on the websites of the BBC, National Geographic, and DPReview.com. Eric's photography combines compelling compositions, end-to-end craftsmanship, and a deep love for the locations he visits. In 2015, Eric will be joining an expedition to the West Coast of Greenland to capture the unique wildlife and Inuit cultures of the region.
