My photographs merge random occurrence with conscious creation in pursuit of elegance within chaos. They are abstract images created by cropping photographs of repurposed art supplies.
Kinetics is a key element in the assembling of my subjects, for in my studio process assorted bits & pieces of dried paint, paper, and used plastic containers are simply tossed onto a light pad allowing them to fall where they may without concern for composition or aesthetics... because kinetic energy has a life of its own and I love it when it is captured within photographs.
After photographing these randomly assembled objects, cropping the resulting images is my conscious way of featuring their individual charisma. Further, I favor a visual language that explores and refines the shallow picture plane and cropping accentuates that preference.
Like the inherent qualities found in all contemporary abstract art, my photographs often appear starkly linear, richly textured and/or almost painterly… and yet they highlight an ephemeral world that reflects upon something vulnerable while speaking to the very nature of our existence.
Except for minor modifications in contrast or hue the only computer processes applied to the photographs is the occasional cloning over of small distractive or reflective spots.
