“Existence is illusory and it is eternal.” – Albert Camus.
My project intends to take the viewer on a journey of curiosity and reflection. In a world that is far more absurd than we realise, our human instinct is to seek order and meaning, however we are frustrated by the refusal of the world to be orderly or meaningful. This can leave one feeling alienated, that one is a stranger to the world and to oneself.
By burning natural forms of life I am exposing the carbon, the central element of life, without it we wouldn’t be here, and it is assumed that if there is life elsewhere it is likely to also be carbon based. By using the symbolic beauty that comes from the flowers and the birds I am also presenting the fragility and vulnerability of existence.
I take comfort in science, and the knowledge that all life is connected and in a way timeless. The building blocks that form our bodies have been here since the beginning, and will carry on to exist into the deep future. We do not just observe the universe, we are the universe, and can never be apart from it.

AUTHOR
Lauren Kaigg, Born in London 1992
Statement
My work is of a personal nature, using photography as a way of self-exploration and tool to expand my perception and understanding of the world around me. Photographing an array of subjects, I use a mixture of analogue and digital processes, but primarily enjoy the slower practice of medium format, which gives me the time to connect with my subjects. Inspired by existentialism, my work tends to ask questions and reflect on philosophical concerns. My style focuses on simplicity with a touch of sensitivity.
