The Umbrellas (Series)
DESCRIPTION
I was lucky enough to witness and experience the recent Hong Kong protests at the end of 2014. I had a chance to be on both sides of the spectrum. I was invisible, ducking in and out of the masses of people, walking night and day between camp stricken streets. I wanted to capture everything that was going on, as objectively as I could. I had the opportunity to stand on the side of the law enforcements and watch the full force of people charging towards us, masked faces chanting and shouting, umbrellas raised and fingers pointing. It was chaotic, mesmerizing and shocking, often stunning to watch such a vast sea of people. It felt good to be able to document each and every moment, to witness all the emotion, solidarity and hardship, and feeling the varying degrees of power acting on each side. I went in as neutrally as possible, with as little expectation as I could, and not wanting to take any sides. I was simply an active observant, trying to capture the raw truth of an incredible moment in history. *Shot with Leica M7, Ilford HP5+
