Meninas do Rio/ The Girls of Rio
I began shooting this photographic essay to contribute to a book about the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The theme was glamour. My photographs would show the Rocha, Irajá, Jacaré , Benfica and other less privileged neighborhoods. It was in 2001, far from the Arpoador beach, that I met my first muses.
I decide to give form to my vision by depicting women and girls in the comfort of their own home-sweet-homes, using a Hasselblad camera from the 1960s, a tripod, continuous lighting and a Fresnel reflector.
When I started thinking about doing this show, ten years after the first photos were taken, I decided to shoot the same people, in the same places a decade later.
I didn’t have a predetermined notion of how this photographic essay would develop, or that it would focus on a particular social class. It flowed out of a series of happy, chance encounters. I met wonderful people along the way who brought beauty and charisma to my work.
