Nocturnal is a lengthy project I am still working on.
The inspiration for this series was not accidental. These works originate from a fraught family history in which there was often the search for tranquility and security. A significant memory from my childhood involved a game I used to play with my dolls (my girls). I would bury them in the ground in our backyard. I fantasized that my girls escaped to another place. The serenity of this game resonated again for me when I encountered the work of the Flemish Primitives during my art studies.
These adolescent girls escaped to a empty place where it is quiet and dark. Melancholy is mingled with the loss of innocence, the children seem to have become adults.
