Project “Rana Plaza & other stories” pays tribute to the garment workers of Rana Plaza, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, many of whom lost their lives in the deadly collapse of the building 23 April, 2013. The current photographs are portraits of fictive individuals. The real garment workers of Rana Plaza were many employed by companies of the fast fashion industries of Western society.
The project is based on sculpting small dolls, turning small-scale models of the human figure into new life-like individuals, eventually capturing them in portrait photographs. The slow process and final images are not only tributes to the producers of the clothes many of us wear, that are part of our embodied identity-projects, but they are reflections on present day selfie-society where selfie-portraits come streaming in a ferocious speed through the channels. Do we reflect on the people we see in these in these numerous photographs; can we ever see a person’s true identity in the layers of embodied and constructed identities?
’Rana Plaza & Other Stories’ is a fine art photography project where the photographic medium is used for its’ real-life documentary qualities, to question the ways we think about and value human expression and identification.
