Floral Interests (Series)
DESCRIPTION
This series of submitted photographs is part of a larger personal project “Seeing Flowers,” inspired by a quote attributed to the American painter Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986): “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment.” O’Keeffe’s now-iconic abstractions of flowers, painted large and in profusions of color, were her attempts to share these worlds with others. As O’Keeffe would acknowledge, however, and often rued when one of her paintings would be unduly (to her) perceived as “erotic” or “feminist,” it is difficult to make people see a flower as you do, or feel the same emotions elicited by a single flower. Nor necessarily should they. Flowers are as complex as they are varied and a viewer brings much to an encounter with a flower. Presented as O’Keeffe did, though, images that are close-up and stripped of distractions offer a chance to “take a flower in your hand and really look at it.” This chance is what I attempt to offer with my images.
