Water Lily (Single)
DESCRIPTION
The white water lily, Nymphaea ampla, grows along the shores of tropical lakes in Guatemala, Belize, and southern Mexico. Its white flowers rise above the plant’s floating leaves, which occasionally curl or roll up. Nymphaea ampla has psychoactive properties and it is a very common subject in pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica art. At the Mexican site of Teotihuacan (ca. AD 450), for example, the rain god was often depicted with with water lily leaves, buds and flowers, most often with water lily buds in his mouth. In Classic Maya art (ca. AD 600-900), water lilies are shown sprouting from the backs of crocodiles, where the crocodiles float on the surface of the watery underworld, and jaguars (a god of the night and of the underworld) are portrayed wearing the stalks and buds of water lilies as head ornaments, or dancing with water lilies. This image is a highly stylized version of the original photograph, with the flower/lily pad and its contexts manipulated to give the illusion that the water lily is open at night. I was attempting to create an image that suggests the magical association of water lilies with the night and underworld by the Classic period Maya inhabitants.
