Similar Differences’ is a visual story about two photographers from distant corners of the world, who despite different experiences and artistic styles, find commonality in the way they perceive their surroundings. They met by chance for the first time in Addis in May 2015 and decided to work together with common images taken BEFORE they had met. This story sheds light on similarities that underlie human existence across the globe. We want to give signs of hope and invite viewers to marvel, dialog and exchange innate curiosities with respect to evolving societal boundaries – particularly in the wake of an escalating migrant crisis.
The series introduces the viewer to pairs of color photographs evoking frontiers, from first natural barriers to societal boundaries. Through comparative photography, we aim to persuade viewers that these are superficial and do not exist at the core of each image. Our selection is about finding human connections beyond dichotomized classifications such as high- or low-income countries. It features painstaking observations of subtle differences between two worlds, in the context of perceiving ‘nowness’ as well as the passing of time through images that speak more than words.
