Livia was born through the spontaneous observation of the surrounding flora in my neighborhood in London.
The location of this subject is a significant departure from the small town in southern Switzerland where I spent my childhood surrounded by woods, alps and lakes.
With Livia I decided to start handling physical materials; in this case, predominantly flowers. I felt the urgency of creating work with a physical immediacy, and began collecting these natural elements from the footpaths around my neighborhood.
Once home, I would let them dry, mix them with water to observe the different manifestations of these objects, and incorporate them into transparent plastic spheres to articulate evocative and mysterious forms.
Digital retouch and scanning make this series a meeting point between two worlds; the organic one and the digital one. Just as the hermaphroditic condition of flowers suggests the joining of opposites in self-becoming. Digital glitches and dust grains purposely outline this contrast. Livia is a garden fresco from Roman villa near the town of Prima Porta; it also encapsulates the feminine spirit of decay and renewal that permeates our individual experiences of nature.
