Conceptual nominee

Grief is a strange and confusing emotion that lingers—its symptoms changing over time. One of the strangest things about grief is the difference in the way we experience it in private and express it in public. Although the experience is in some ways universal, mourning remains highly personal and subjective. Photography has served as a remedial tool for me. During times of personal sorrow, I have pushed myself to create and capture scenarios that convey my grief and help me understand the mourning process so that I can ultimately make peace with it. It is not necessarily my intention to tell my own stories about the ones I’ve lost, but to merely use those stories as a foundation for work that can relate to a broader audience. The pictures I make serve as a tribute to, and in memoriam of those I’ve lost. The work I present to you is a depiction of my grieving process, how it shifted my perspective, and how I grew stronger because of it.

Danielle Tolson, a Florida native, is a Boston based artist working in the field of photography. She is currently a BFA candidate at Lesley University College of Art and Design (formerly known as The Art Institute of Boston) and will be graduating in the spring of 2016.
