Procedures (Series)
DESCRIPTION
“Procedures” is a series of work focusing on dimensionality and the physical process of creating a photographic image. Living as a millennial in 2015, I am surrounded by the mass of stock images created by millions of social media users. I have visually consumed large amounts of flat low-quality images that have zero substance, other than giving the “photographer” more likes on Instagram or Facebook. This has created a desire for me to work with high quality dimensional images that speak to me on a deeper level. Therefore, when seeking images that meet these requirements I’ve discovered that I value the use of analogue photographic processes and mixed media. Each image in this series is shot on 120mm film and developed into a 10x10inch silver gelatin print. I either sewed into the image with thread, or layered images on top of each another. These techniques mimic how a surgeon performs a delicate and complex procedure. They create an image with dimensionally and a surreal narrative. Using analogue photographic processes has allowed me to appreciate the craft of expressing an idea through photography and the careful execution of that image by the human hand.
