BEYOND THE WALL
In Europe we are increasingly building noise protection walls along our highways to limit the noise disturbance from increased traffic. Driving on the highway, these walls obstruct the view on the landscape locking you down in a visual tunnel. Seen from the other (outer) side, these walls become a pieces of installation art in the landscape: They hide the reason for their existance, the highway. At the same time they replace the noise disturbance with a massive visual intervention to the landscape. An intervention that raises questions about what walls do with us, where protection ends and where delimitation of our horizon and thinking starts. Questions about what we know and what we imagine beyond a wall. How and if at all a wall can be hidden or embellished. And questions about human actions fighting to tear down walls in one place and at the same time erecting miles and miles of walls in other places thus creating new places "beyond the wall".
