Architecture nominee

In "Chicago through the Looking Glass" the city’s architecture is shown reflected in various horizontal surfaces: puddles, ponds, frozen river ice. The images have been flipped vertically, transporting us into a looking glass world. Using a small aperture, both reflecting surfaces and reflections are in focus. The reflecting surface texture appears superimposed upon the architecture, showing the city as a multi-layered environment.

This work was partly inspired by Lewis Carroll's children's book Through the Looking Glass in which Alice finds a world that is familiar and yet not quite right. After reading a poem in the looking-glass world, she notes: `Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas -- only I don't exactly know what they are!’ Carroll was pointing out that seeing something we don’t quite understand gets us thinking. I wanted to use the Looking Glass trick to show in photographs familiar city architecture in an unfamiliar way.
