The Flint Hills of Kansas represent the epitome of the great-wide-open of The Great Plains. A furrowed rolling terrain seemingly barren and sparse. Yet is warmly tone with a coat of life making it appear soft and pleasing to the eye. I have photographed The Flint Hills on five separate occasions and although this photo doesn't necessarily represent the grand drama of the rolling landscape the area is known for, it does present the relationship of its inhabitants to the land. Due to the high concentration of chert (flint) in the soil the land does not lend itself to the kind of farming Kansas is known for. Instead, cattle grazing is what drives the economy and the simple post and barb wire fence in this photo is a common site here.
As the sun was waning on this blustery late winter day, the clouds thinned enough to show where the sun was hidden behind them while the barbed wire fence pointed the way "into the light" or "Eis Phos" as its titled.
