Nature 1st place winner

Much of my work focuses upon nature and my relationship with landscape and the natural world. I'm also interested in the place that other species have in the human world: how they are managed and controlled, where they are allowed to exist and where they are prevented from existing.
One way I have started to explore this interest is by visiting historic houses and gardens in Northumberland, Scottish Borders and Central Belt.

This series was taken in the glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, on a cold but sunny winters da. It is the start of a portfolio, which I'm intending to build over the next year. Whilst there I was enthralled by the atmosphere as I travelled through rainforests, deserts and montane tropics. The air was damp and heavy and even the light seemed to have absorbed the silent energy of thousands of plants.

I am an artist and creative practitioner and primarily work with photography and sound. I work with community groups and schools on arts and heritage projects, and much of my time is spent helping people develop their creative and artistic talents. When I'm not working with others I spend most of my time with my camera or in the music studio. Much of my photography and music explores memory and narrative or my relationship to the natural world.

I am currently working on my first photographic solo show: "Extraordinary Objects". This comprises of a series of portraits of people with objects that have become repositories for their memories. The show will also include oral history recordings and photographic series that interpret the stories associated with the extraordinary objects.
