Silo City (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century a significant number of new grain silos were constructed along the Buffalo river as a consequence of the enhanced capabilities of reinforced concrete (mainly strength and fire-proof). These facilities were critical to the development of the mid-west grain industry in both the USA and Canada, providing the transshipment point from the grain steamers on the Great Lakes to the canals and railroads east to New York and beyond. However, the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway and other alternatives in the 1950's lead to their closure and abandonment. For the past 60 years the silos and their equipment have stood as silent sentinels along the river, slowly decaying but losing little of their majesty and impact.
AUTHOR
Born and raised in England, but living in California since the late 1980’s, my photographic skills are self-taught through decades of patience and practice. Black and white photography has always been my first love -- the simplicity, elegance, drama, timeliness and richness that it can bring to an image for me drives a more visceral response. I’m excited by the emotional ‘punch’ that black and white images bring in this particular context – the contrasts between light and dark, areas of luminance and tonality, and the abstractions of shapes and forms -- that “special” quality that heightens the emotion and impact of the image.
