Passing By (Series)
DESCRIPTION
The series was produced using a discretely positioned tripod-mounted camera in various underpasses in Chicago. The pedestrians are strangers, their anonymity enhanced using long exposures to create motion blurring. People become abstract objects in a concrete setting.
Motion blurring is not something we perceive with unaided eyes. The camera creates it by merging together instances of time. When we walk, some parts of us are momentarily static while other parts move. This results in distinctive patterns of blurring. Clothing becomes streaked, limbs elongated, bodies translucent. This abstraction opens a window for the imagination, creating "imagination space." In most of the images I have enhanced the imagination space by combining frames from a sequence. Time becomes an addition dimension of the composition.
The images were created during the spring and summer of 2017.
