I met this characteristic man in Indonesia-Lombok on the last day of Ramadan.
Passing by with a scooter I had to turn and ask for a portrait.
We couldn´t understand each other in any language we both could speak.
That´s what fascinates me about photography. Understanding a person without speaking a word and portrait him or her. Nearly all of my pictures are shot without talking to each other.
So this man was leaning on a bench and I asked with my hands and feet if I´m allowed to make a portrait.
I had the feeling of a deep connection to him while I was trying to get him right. And he definitely understood me and what he had to do.
When I was finished I showed him the final picture and wanted to give something in return. He just smiled and denied all offers.
