DESCRIPTION
In the 7th century, the Muslims invaded the Iberian Peninsula and built a mosque in Córdoba upon a small Gothic-style church. The city was recaptured by the Christians later in the 13th century and the Mosque was renovated into a Catholic Church. In 1523, the church was upgraded with a Renaissance style temple and became Mosque-Cathedral today. The Muslims are fascinated by the columns created by the ancient Romans, therefore they brought all the Roman columns they could find back to Córdoba in order to build the base structure of the mosque; the Christians were moved by the beautiful ornaments of the Muslim architecture, thus they added their own religious architectural elements to the existing building instead of demolishing it. The respect and admiration between the two religions not only allow this wonderful image of a statue of Jesus Christ being placed in the middle of the Muslim-style arches, but also serve as a lesson that modern society must learn.
