The images from this project “masked: the solitary carnival,” speak of memory, childhood and of fear as well as the search for the resolution and comprehension of these traditions rooted in my territory.
The “masked” are people who dress in old clothes, covering up the maximum possible with the intention of blending with the rest and avoiding recognition. In past times, they also carried sticks with which to hit the people. Personally, It terrified me.
It causes in me sensations of fear, attraction and sorrow. I do not comprehend this form of entertainment that forces solitude.
My work can be considered as documentary portraiture. However the photographs do not only aim to represent a reality but also, through the images, aspire to communicate all the intimate imaginary world of my subconscious.
I try to communicate an interior reality that feeds upon the collective memory of our people.
The photographs are of real people that I encounter in the villages during carnival period and whom I ask to pose for me.
I try to create a scenery that amalgamates the encounter between the real and the subjective and whose representation amplifies the range of sensations that all these personalities provoke in me.
