Melting Kaleidoscope (Series)
DESCRIPTION
I am interested in producing abstract photographs that reflect partially controlled processes mixed with spontaneous creation. In this Melting Kaleidoscope series, I set out wanting to create a visual reference to the work of Color Field artist Morris Louis and the abstract paintings of visual artist Gerhard Richter. The series was produced using gallons of liquid soap and watercolors. Pouring the thick soap into clear glass containers, such as vases and glasswares, and then crushing watercolor blocks into the soap, a magical new universe unfolded. This process is organic and unpredictable, which is part of what makes the resulting photographic images so unexpected and unique. While some of the images in the series look like fantastical scenes from outer space or a colorful alternate universe, others resemble fantastical abstract water color paintings. Unlike my other work, where I maintain strict control of the environment to capture still life vignettes or the faces and bodies of my models, the process of creating the Melting Kaleidoscope series, required me to relinquish a certain amount of creative control and allow the spontaneous process of creation to magically unfold. Here, I created the laboratory for the creation and then allowed for the organic process
