            Surface View (Series)

                DESCRIPTION

My subject matter for this series are from recent macro-studies of aged surfaces, in particular weathered stone, concrete and wood. Althougth this work began as close up abstracts of textural surfaces, over time I began to visualise land & seascapes within them. Framing characteristics such as cracks became horizon lines, staining, lichen growth and flaking paint mimicked cloud formations. A mirroring it seemed, of the place in which these surfaces exist. This created a shift in perspective & by having no reference point of scale or depth of field, presented a much greater distant view to the work and became more suggestive of watercolour or oil painting. An exploration of where a line between art and photography meet?
