the dream of Gibellina (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Gibellina is a small city in Sicily, Italy. It was destroyed by the 1968 earthquake and totally rebuilt just few kilometers away. For the new city, the then major Ludovico Corrao proposed an ambitious project: a "concrete utopia" to rebuild the city through art. Many artist contribuited to the reconstruction, giving life to the largest museum en plain air in the world. Since the reconstruction the project has been at a center of controversy regarding the function of the art in relation to the territory, because it seems not not related to the real needs of the population. The Great Cretto of Gibellina is a site-specific land art work made by Alberto Burri between 1984 and 1989 in the place where the old town of Gibellina once stood. In fact, it rises in the same place where once there were the rubble, currently "cemented" by the work of Burri. From above the work appears as a series of concrete fractures on the ground, whose artistic value lies in the freezing of the historical memory of a country.
