Being a Woman (Aukaat) (Single)
DESCRIPTION
Spandita Malik's work in the project ‘Being a Woman’ earnestly and persistently exposes India's rape culture and violence resulting in it's ghastly symptoms borne of an extreme gendered society. The resilient women of the country carry the marks of such brutality and injustice and the history of being treated as inferior beings. During my adolescence, many of the city’s public places were dominated by men, and so felt unsafe. Walking through them, I'd brace myself for the stares and lewd comments, which would come irrespective of what I was wearing. In late 2012, the 23-year-old woman died as a result of a brutal gang rape on a Delhi bus. Although I had heard about rapes frequently on the news, that incident affected me differently. It seemed less abstract, closer to home. This project is an abstraction of the emotive turmoil of gendered violence and a response to it. The double exposure photograph is mirrored in a copper plate etch of the original photograph. The women of the society are repeatedly scarred, leaving us uncertain of our opinion towards to the scar itself. This photograph portrays the scars and becomes a mere reflection to the brutality that has hurt our souls.
