A photographic series by
Erin Hogue
This series stems from my investigations in quantum theory, specifically in relation to identity. Quantum theory states that an event must be observed to be real. Quantum reality emphasises “the role of observer as a fundamental participant, determining what is actually being seen.” There are infinite arrays of possibilities overlapping and converging all the time and it is only the individuals’ awareness to a specific ‘possibility’ that makes it real. However, it is the beliefs’ of society and culture that create what is referred to as the “group mind” and affects what the individual considers possible in their reality. It is this “group mind” of society that influences how the individual perceives themselves and therefore affects how they construct their reality.
Through use of the white figure I denaturalize the body so as to raise questions regarding identity. In this series I represent the body as a pure, uncontaminated entity beyond appearances. White light contains the entire colour spectrum, and in order to get any other colour something must be subtracted from the original white light. White light then, in film, contains everything, and any image that appears on the film
