Relative Motion (Series)
DESCRIPTION
The magic of slow shutter speed is that it organizes information in a way that is outside our everyday realm of experience. Panning is the tracking of relative motion between a subject and the camera. I wanted to show that objects that are normally still can be interesting subjects too, provided that the camera is moving at high speed. Through a combination of camera motions, I was able to obtain interesting effects, for example complex curved velocity fields and the background being moved in multiple directions simultaneously.
AUTHOR
I am a new photographer and utterly fascinated by how the camera can show the visible in a way that is alien to the natural sensorial endowment of our species -- not just in terms of detail, but of kind. I love the challenge of learning to parse slow-shutter images, and I love looking for words that describe what the camera allows me to see. I also find it intriguing that photographs can reveal a lot about things that are not actually shown.
In both my art and academic interests, I am driven by the desire to understand my surroundings, explore how perception forms concepts and how to structure information. I have been looking for the key to reorient in a disorienting world.
