What I Found in Devil's Glen (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Devil's Glen is the name of a gorge in Weston, Connecticut, USA, through which the Saugatuck River runs as it comes down from the nearby Saugatuck Reservoir. It is only about a fifth of a mile long, but, to me, it has been like Cleopatra in Shakespeare's description: "age cannot wither her, not custom stale her infinite variety." The place has been the subject of thousands of my photographs for almost fifteen years, it was the subject of a published and anthologized poem of mine, a place where my life was once saved by an undeniable miracle. It was the lab in which I learned to make photographs in difficult, contrasty light and sometimes-perilous conditions. In addition to capturing the changing wonders of the Glen, which ends in a bend, drop, and deep cauldron of water, I have sought to capture the varieties and mysteries of life, going beyond the clichés of nature photography, as I hope that the submitted photos from that portfolio will demonstrate.
