Forsaken or the eradication of the Inuit Identity (Series)
DESCRIPTION
This body of work was taken last September inside a deserted village in Greenland. I've always been fascinated by abandoned places. But in this case, this forsaken village appears to me as a symbol and a cruel visualisation of the lost Inuit identity. It’s not only crying out for its lost inhabitants but for the death of a way of life, for the Inuit culture and traditions that has been erased and demonized in less than a generation through the policies from the 70' and 80'. The Danish government decided to close this village (as dozens others) and forced its inhabitants to move to bigger settlement where their way of life, based on collective hunting and trading of meat and skins, wouldn't make sense anymore. They had to move to apartment blocks that were supposed to be a symbol of progress but felt foreign and lonely. When this village was still alive, it was representative of a way of life constitutive of the Inuit identity and culture. The suicide rate in Greenland is the highest in the world (mainly touching the young generation) and is linked, according to diverse analysts, to the eradication of the Inuit identity.
AUTHOR
After a master in Philosophy of Law in Paris, I went to London to study cinematography at the London Film School.
I spent ten years working as a DOP in very various projects (music video, documentary, commercials, short films…). Over the last few years, I started focusing more on still photography. I worked for a year and a half for a website, lebazarfrancais.com, doing all their visuals. I quit last winter, wanting to be able to spent more time focusing on a personal approach of photography.
I’m starting now to show my work as a photographer. I’ve been selected on online contest as shoottheframe and life framer as well as the 5th Fine Art Photography award and i just had my first exposition of a full body of work in Strasbourg through the festival rendez-vous images Strasbourg.
