Photographing the Karo tribe in Ethiopia's Omo Valley, this elder tribesman caught my eye. He was in full body paint, sitting under a tree, watching as the younger tribesmen posed in groups, or individually with their AK47s. I thought he was quite surreal, especially when I looked closer and saw that he had lost a chunk of his left ear - what stories he must have to tell.
He posed readily for this image (in which I experimented with an off-camera flash) - although he remained unsmiling and almost other-worldly.
