I have always been fascinated by history and have fond memories of visiting my local museum as a child. As an adult, I have become more and more intrigued by the fact that the full collections of any museum are so much larger and more eclectic than the comparatively small selection of items that are on display to the public at any one time. I decided that a photographic project based around the 'hidden' items in a museum's stores could be incredibly compelling, both visually and educationally; I think many people are unaware of the work that goes on behind the scenes in a museum and the huge value of a well maintained and varied archive. This series of images seeks to portray the incredible breadth of objects that have been collected by, or donated to, a small museum in Gloucestershire over the last century; from the beautiful, to the slightly unsavoury, to the frankly bizarre.

Theo Deproost’s fine-art work displays a clear and unifying objective - to nurture a more exploratory, imaginative and gratifying approach to viewing the world around us; probing the liminal space between art, documentation and education. When producing photographic work, Deproost strives to combine a high level of technical ability with an inquisitive creativity.
