Taken by the sea, on hot days, this photographic series questions the memory and trace of these moments of abandonment.
The photo, through its work, becomes a look that questions the reality of what the eye perceives. At the beginning, it fixes and suspends a time (of joy, shared life, complicity...) present at the moment of the shooting. Then, as Roland Barthes notes, it becomes "what it was".
To what the eye sees is added a look of nostalgia, of a lost sweetness in the face of what is no longer and will never be found. The radicality of this loss is the other side of what is seen and manifested by another setting.
The sun here is no longer gentle heat, it crushes, overwhelms and saturates the bodies with its light, until it dissolves them into evanescent beings. The characters move into fragile memories that are almost vanished.
Where are we in this imaginary place where the lines fade away to become only traces? These stigmas express the expression of a loss of a bygone time.

AUTHOR
Jean-Francois Dareths, graduated from the School of Architecture in Bordeaux (1993). He started his career in Paris in a Photo Agency called Phanie and prepared his first photographic exhibition « Routa Maya » for the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux.
In 1994, he resumed his studies by enrolling in a post-graduate diploma. In 1998 he obtained a PhD in the field of Art and Current Societies. That same year he was a laureate of the Lagardere Foundation winning the digital Creator Award.
Simultaneously, he created his own graphic studio "JFD" in which he holds the position of artistic director. He appeared in various personal and collective exhibitions (Arc en Rève CAPC Bordeaux museum, GalerieD, Galerie Galiatus ...) and he participated in artist residencies New York Chelsea.
From 1998 to 2018, he held the position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communication at the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne where he taught visual writing.
Since 2015 he has been working, like director, on film and vidéo as well as photography (Documentary, cultural magazine, public commission, TV program). Whether he is responding to an order or continuing his personal research, his relationship to the image remains demanding and questioning.
