This is my third series based in Dubuque, Iowa. I spent most of my first eight years there. Beginning in 1983 my visits to Dubuque were to create photography series. I have three: Dubuque Revisited, Fractical Dubuque and now Nonlinear Dubuque. The newest series is comprised of 60 images.
This artwork consists of three overlaid images, with two of them upside down. The primary image is of a room that was my kindergarten class in 1961. At that time the campus consisted of three buildings: the nunnery of the Sisters of the Visitation, an all girls Catholic elementary school and a boiler room heating all buildings with a co-ed kindergarten class located above it. The campus now belongs to Loras College. At the time of my photograph the room seemed to be used for storage. One of the upside down overlaid images is from a small brick parking area adjacent this building. It remains unchanged from 1961. The other upside down image is from an interior of an abandoned retail space near the Mississippi River.
I created three images from these layers with a focus on the polarity obscure/reveal. This one reminds of the painter Georges Braque.
