This portrait is part of my series Surfaces.
This series is created to generate appreciation of diversity in its physical form. The diversity of body and beauty types is changing the aesthetic standards of our time and with it, people’s cultural and identity codes.Mostly thanks to social media, much progress has been made towards a more inclusive representation of our differences. Perhaps, through an aesthetic revolution that only art can carry, we can change people’s gaze.
This is Sandra who has Alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that often results in hair loss. Sandra lost all her hair at the age of 4.
The clothes are designed by internationally celebrated contemporary Dutch Fashion Designers who each also take daily inspiration from the 17th and 18th century clothing designs.
I street casted all my models myself and did my own retouching to keep control over the results from the sketch to the end result.
