The ‘Remnants’ series combines abstraction and realism, a concept that originated from art studies in old growth forests during an expedition to Norfolk Island which is located in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast of Australia.
During my time among the ancient forests I began to see windows within the landscape. I was inspired by the vulnerability of life within time and space due to constant change. It became desperately important for me to capture a brief moment of time before it was lost. I sensed these windows were a chance that was all too fleeting just as life itself.
I use drawing and photography to capture aspects of my subjects to bring this impression back to my studio. Followed by creating various works in watercolour whereby I sought to recreate the fluid ever changing moments of the forest. Finally by combining all mediums using digitisation, I then manipulate the colour palate to express the indefiniteness of our existence.
The final forest landscape works present a kaleidoscopic window onto a natural world that is fast disappearing. The Remnants series has embedded within it a sense of magical realism where natural worlds ripple and collide.
