Transformation: A Mentowai Shaman's Smile (Series)
DESCRIPTION
The Mentowai are an ancient indigenous people believed to have arrived in Sumatra and the surrounding islands over two thousand years ago - a culture whose knowledge and belief system has been passed down through initiation from shaman to shaman to this day. Kuki Sakalio is perhaps the most renowned on Siberut island, a 'master shaman' revered locally for his perceptive cheerfulness and infectious laughter. However, during sacred ceremonies, his countenance becomes noticeably serious and focused. This series of photographs captures a moment of metamorphosis from Kuki’s deep pensive state to infectious laughter. This mirrors a shaman's unique ability to mesmerize and transform.
