The genocide of Srebrenica is one of the vilest episodes of contemporary European history.
Within a few days, in July 1995, about 8,300 boys and men were executed while 30,000 people composed of women, children and the elderly were forced to abandon their villages by force.
Every year in July the poor remains of the slain men found throughout the year are returned to their families. Many mass graves containing bodies of people executed in Srebrenica have not yet been exhumed, some because they are in areas littered with anti-personnel mines and others because their position is unknown.
Mothers, wives and daughters have decided to bury their children, husbands and fathers together. They buried them in this place, in front of the old UN headquarters, where they had seen them alive for the last time before being handed over to their executioners.
