As a Fine Art Photographer, I am closely examining themes, symbolism, and stories with each picture that is made. The inspiration is pulled from different facets of my life or someone else's. For me, it is important to have meaning and depth within a picture because empty art is art for no one.
This particular series is built around the sentiment that Joan Didion wrote: "We tell ourselves stories in order to live."
This is a collection of artwork that is centered around three books I have read that shows the power that books and storytelling can have on an individual or an entire community. The three books are "The Giver of Stars", "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit", and "The Only Girl in the World"
Either a memoir or an honest blend of reality and fictional circumstances, to the authors, books were an assurance that situations can change and that lives could be lived, even if it was just by reading the words on the pages. Books helped some build a community while for others, it brought a sense of solidarity: they were not alone.
