VELATURAS (Series)
DESCRIPTION
During a trip to Israel in 2018, visual artist Helena Teixeira Rios visited the cities of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Acre, Haifa, Safed, Masada and Nazareth.
Helena thus found herself challenged by a problem that is posed to any photographer: how to reveal, through pictures, the essence of an occupied territory? It was in light of this perspective, after returning from her trip to Israel, that the artist began to sift through her photographs that pointed to a maelstrom of optical fields that were both singular and diffuse in terms of their visuality and emotion.
In the supportive atmosphere of her studio, Helena perceived that the photographs she had obtained in Israel were like a clay to be modeled. She saw that an action of intervention would be necessary to turn them into a visual instance and narrative able to express the emotions she had experienced in that territory. Using various techniques, she transfigured the photographs to the point where they entered another dynamics through the use of layers of paints, scratches, overlayings and and watercolors that gave rise to a timeless patina, reductions and concealments of certain referents.

Helena Teixeira Rios is graduated in Archictecture and Urbanism and did her Master`s degree at the Universidad Politecnica de Catalunia, in Barcelona, Spain. She worked and ran her own archictecture office. Later she opened the Casa Design Brasileiro selling different and creative furniture. She went on to open her own furniture business designing, making and selling her pieces. Her innovative pieces of furniture were resold in many cities and exported to Europe and the United States.
She began working with photography in 2010 aiming at the elaboration of photo essays and make post graduation in photography, art and culture in 2015.
