Symmetry in Surrealism
My work as an artist has always been drawn to the abstract and surreal. To me, the chaos and combination of seemingly unrelated images inherent in these genres are representative of the world we have created.
As part of my art, I often record photographic images in two contexts, the natural world and our constructed environment. However, the images I record tend to be of one or the other, but not often both in the same image. I realized that these two contexts rarely exist equally, as one often tries to overpower the other. Recently, I have begun to examine the relationship that exists between the natural world and our constructed environment. My ongoing series “Symmetry in Surrealism” are the results of that investigation. To me, the concept of symmetry suggests a balance. This balance must exist for both the natural world and our constructed environment to equally evolve and grow. In view of the chaos and combination of seemingly unrelated images inherent in surrealism, this series attempts to reconcile these contexts and bring order to the world I live in.
