Gelske (Single)
DESCRIPTION
This photo is part of a series, where we combined stories from the past with a modern element. In this photo you see Gelske Wierts, an eigtheen-year-old girl from Dronrijp. Johannes Mulder (1769-1810) became a professor of medicine in Franeker. On the twenty-first of July 1798, Mulder performs a leg amputation on Gelske Wierts. He takes the leg completely out of the hip joint. Mulder is the first doctor with whom the patient survives this operation. Gelske recovers amazingly quickly. Later she married and had five children. In this photo we photographed the girl on the attic of the Franeker University, where she attaches a modern day prostethic to her hip.
