Created in response to a series of drum-sketches composed by percussionist Aletta Verwoerd, these images seek to see beyond our conditioning and ask: ‘who I would be if I allow myself to discover myself for myself?’
The photographer used local census data to track her maternal line back hundreds of years. She discovered that her ancestors almost exclusively came from the small archipelago of islands - the Isles of Scilly - where she herself grew up and has recently returned to, after ten years away.
Shot amongst the granite formations that pepper the island, this self portrait series combines person and place to explore landscape and physical body. The images delve into woman’s connection to the earth, moon-cycles, family and the repeated rhythms of life and death, rediscovered when reconnecting to this place and past generations of women who also dwelt there.
