Persia Sportmen (Series)
DESCRIPTION
Pahlevani and Zourkhaneh rituals, which were Inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In a typical session, one will witness several distinctive exercises — for example, the rhythmic swinging of Persian Meels in a group. Meel swinging is a group exercise, and Morshed is the person who chants and plays the drum while guiding the group practitioners. As the Morshed drums faster, the swings become faster. In the place I visited in Shiraz of Iran, the Morshed is also a highly respected hero in this sport, and it was such an unforgettable experience to be able to capture photos in this very traditional gym.
