If any artist’s work is profoundly influenced by their surroundings then that artist is Téber. His home town of Caracas has undergone a recent terrible transformation from prosperity to penury. So you would expect his art to reflect this crisis, exhibiting a palette of political and social unrest. Well, actually no. He’s created precisely the opposite.
His super bright, optimistic works are an antidote to the harsh realities of everyday Venezuelan life. They offer vistas of a sunny, prosperous world, a million miles from downtown Caracas. Rejecting his immediate situation, Téber imagines a place of eternal sunshine with pastel shades, clean lines and a hyper real sheen. It’s an evocation that displays an aspirational aesthetic that until very recently was his reality. And makes it all the more powerful for it.
