A personal project that features portraits of refugees who have arrived in Italy from countries plagued by war and poverty and are awaiting asylum. While history honors famous journeyers, the majority of them were motivated by money, fame, personal glory or war.
These men embark on long and dangerous travels not for glory, money or war but for freedom. I have photograph them as historical figures, such as Colombo, Magellan, Stanley, Livingstone, Percy, Napoleon, Gengis Khan and other famous explorers, conquistadors and generals, inspired by classic paintings and photographs.
These photos were taken in Florence over a period of two years, in a Protection System for Asylum Seekers center.
Over 150 portraits were shot during these period of time.
